Course Description

This course is designed to teach the skills and techniques necessary to be employed working with orthopaedic physicians to treat patients in a variety of health care environments. The program provides the skills and knowledge needed to become a competent orthopaedic technologist performing the following services: routine office and departmental procedures; applying, adjusting and removing casts, splints, and braces; setting up, adjusting, and maintaining traction configurations; assisting with the care of acutely injured patients assisting the physician in the reduction and/or manipulation of orthopaedic injuries.

Outcomes

• Describe anatomical structure and function of the human body related to the practice of orthopaedics.
• Discuss diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system and related structures.
• Demonstrate physical assessment of the orthopaedic patient.
• Perform routine maintenance of equipment.
• Disinfect and sterilize materials and equipment.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the use of radiology in orthopaedic technology.
• Demonstrate ability to apply, adjust, and remove all common orthopaedic devices.
• Assist the orthopaedic physician with various treatments and procedures.
• Assist the orthopaedic surgeon in the operating room using aseptic technique.
• Demonstrate use of exercise, assistive/supportive devices and specialized equipment
• Instruct other healthcare providers, patients and families to perform selected treatment procedures and functional activities.
